“This program is all about providing a safe, efficient, effective workout.”
Kristine Staral had a challenging year in 2019. She lost her job, as well as her husband and father.
“It was a rough year last year, but it was an opportunity to reinvent myself,” Staral said.
In 2020, she decided she wanted to switch things up a bit. So she looked into the possibility of owning a franchise.
“One of the things I knew about myself was that it was super important for me to find a concept that offered some ability to make a difference in people’s lives,” she said.
While doing research, Staral learned about The Exercise Coach. She went to Houston to learn more about the concept and workout, which is based around two 20-minute workouts per week.
“I said, wait a minute … that didn’t make sense to me. There’s just no way,” she said.
Then she tried it for herself.
All it took was a five-minute workout on the leg press machine, and Staral was hooked.
“I was on that for less than five minutes, and I felt my quads for days, in a good way,” Staral said.

But this “fitness studio” doesn’t have dumbbells, treadmills or bench presses. Rather, this exercise business is focused around computers and robotics.
“That’s what this workout was built for. It’s all about muscle quality and demand over duration,” she said.
Staral opened The Exercise Coach recently inside Galleria West, at 18900 W. Bluemound Road, Brookfield.
The workout is geared toward adults who are older than 40. But Staral said the program can work for anyone.
The pillars of the program are based on personalized exercise, healthy eating and motivational support. The workout is based on improving muscle mass.
After an initial consultation, clients get started on the machines, which focus on resistance training and the concentric and eccentric movement of muscles.
There are just a few machines at the workout space, but all of them have a monitor that tracks the client’s progress.
Machines include a leg press, chest press and an abdominal machine.
The Exercise Coach uses a customized strength program for each client.
When a client uses a machine, they view the screen to see how much effort they’re using in real time by viewing a line on a graph on the screen. The goal is to stay within a predetermined range when using the machine, while applying as much force on the machine as possible.
The machine customizes each workout, and after the client is done, a performance review will indicate what the next workout on that machine should look like.
Starting as early as age 30, the average person loses about a half-pound of muscle tissue each year, according to The Exercise Coach website.
“It’s not uncommon for our clients to increase their strength in some muscle groups by as much as 50% in as little as 8-12 weeks,” the website also says.
The program can be used for weight loss, to build strength and stamina or just to generally improve your health.
Staral said someone could come in with lower back issues.
“And we’ll say, ‘OK, we’re going to look to target that area, but we’re going to do it super safe,'” Staral said, “we’re going to look at your range of motion, and over time, when we’re working on your lower back with this equipment, you will see improvements with whatever issues you’re dealing with.”
Staral said she and her team will perform temperature checks on everyone who comes into the location.
The Exercise Coach is by appointment only, meaning there’s typically only one client and one coach in the space at a time.
Staff uses a MicroShield 360 antiviral spray and cleans the equipment every time it’s used.
Cleints are required to use hand sanitizer before workouts, and to change their shoes when they arrive.
Masks are also required.
“This is the type of workout that’s easy to do with a mask on,” Staral added.

Staral said Brookfield is a “great location for the demographic.”
She also hopes to open a location in Mequon soon. The Brookfield location is the third location in Wisconsin.
The Exercise Coach was founded in 2000. There are nearly 100 studios nationwide.
The cost is $35 to $50 for a one-on-one session. The price fluctuates depending on how many sessions are purchased at a time.
