UNC Adams School of Dentistry Offers Free Dental Care for DEAH DAY

Since 2015, the UNC Adams School of Dentistry has a day where it gives back to the community to honor its late students Deah Barakat and Yusor Abu-Salha. This year, the school is offering free dental care for its recognition of DEAH DAY.

The school will be have appointments for community members on Wendesday, October 7, for free treatment, including dental exams, x-rays, extractions, sealants, fluoride and fillings. Appointments are available between 7:45 a.m. and 1:45 p.m and those interested can call the Carolina Dentistry Virtual Oral Health Care Helpline, at 919-537-3088, to be screened and schedule a visit.

Wednesday will be the sixth annual DEAH DAY held by the school, which was established in the wake of their death. The acronym stands for Directing Efforts And Honoring Deah And Yusor and the effort has seen the school’s students participate in various service activities like trail clean-ups, food pantry drives and building houses with Habitat for Humanity. For the 2019 DEAH DAY, more than 400 volunteers provided more than 1,100 hours of service at more than 34 sites across five counties.

According to the Adams School, all patients interested in the free care clinic will be screened ahead of their appointment in order to create a treatment plan. Patients will be able to park for free in the Dogwood Parking Deck on UNC campus, which is off Manning Drive. A release with the announcement says the school will be following some physical distancing guidelines due to COVID-19 health protocols, which makes space for appointments in the clinic limited.

More information about DEAH DAY and other student-led service efforts within the Adams School of Dentistry can be found on the school’s website.
